You know you’re not supposed to feed your dog chocolate, onions, grapes/raisins, macadamia nuts and avocados. And you monitor for sensitivity to common food allergens such as meat, corn, wheat and soy.

But you’re only human, and sometimes it’s hard to resist your dog’s sweet stare as he begs you with his eyes to share some of your delicious homo sapien cuisine. When you want to give him a treat from your table, do you know which “human” foods are safe to feed your pup?

To find the answer, we called upon Liz Palika, author of “The Ultimate Pet Food Guide,” and Susan Lauten, animal nutritionist, to explain which fresh, frozen and canned foods people typically eat that are safe for dogs to consume too.

1. Melons: Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew are all healthy options for your pooch. “My dogs will take me down over cantaloupe,” says Lauten. “I am required to share the whole thing with them.” Consult animal poison control before feeding your dogs any of the more exotic melons.

2. Sunflower seeds (shelled): Skip the salt if possible, or serve in moderation, recommends Lauten. “Remember, treats should not comprise more than 10 percent of your dog’s daily calorie intake. If your dog gets 500 calories a day, 50 calories could come from treats.”

3. Peanut butter: Peanuts don’t appear to cause allergies in dogs like they do in people, says Lauten. “I have some highly food-sensitive dogs for whom peanut butter is a large part of their diet.”

4. Berries (fresh and frozen): Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, huckleberries or raspberries — all are good for your furry friend for the same reason they’re good for humans: free-radical-fighting antioxidants. “A lot of dogs like them frozen,” says Lauten.

5. Cooked chicken: Ran out of your dog’s regular food? Whether boiled, baked, served rotisserie-style or grilled, this food is a healthy substitute. “Dogs will eat a freshly cooked chicken any way they can get it,” says Lauten.

Healthy dogs can handle cooking oils and seasonings. Just be sure to avoid adding onion or too much garlic. If you’re concerned, non-salt seasonings can be used, but that matters more for the human eater than the dog, explains Lauten. Scrambled eggs, hamburger, rice, pasta and/or oatmeal can serve as meal replacements in a pinch, adds Lauten.

6. Cheese: This is a safe snack for dogs, but just like humans, they can experience lactose intolerance, so monitor your dog’s reaction. “Many families use a dollop of cottage cheese with every meal,” says Lauten. To avoid overfeeding, consider giving your dog low- or reduced-fat dairy products.

7. Bananas: “My dogs love bananas and I share mine with them regularly,” says Lauten. “All fruits have phytonutrients and required nutrients. They are good for all of us. If the foods are healthy for me, they are more apt to be healthy for the dog,” says Palika.

8. Apple slices: Lauten recommends serving your pup seedless, organic apple slices, because apple seeds naturally contain cyanide. Citrus fruits such as oranges are good too, but leave off the rinds; they contain many oils and could be too strong for a dog’s digestive system.

9. Baby carrots: Fresh, crunchy vegetables are good for your dog’s teeth, says Lauten. Plus, it’s a bit easier not to overfeed with veggies. “If you’re giving your dog vegetables, you can give a lot more in volume,” because these are low-calorie foods.

10. Green beans: Because this veggie fills dogs up, weight-management programs often include green beans, usually canned with no salt added, says Lauten. “An entire can of green beans contains 70 calories. What a bargain, and filling too!”

Of course every dog is different and you and your vet know best if he or she has any food sensitivities, weight issues or other health concerns that should guide your dog’s diet. It is always a good idea to check with your pet’s doctor if you are planning on changing what your dog eats. Also keep in mind that it is best to introduce new foods to your dog slowly. You don’t want your pooch to get gas, bloating, soft stools or other digestive problems.

The Shih Tzu is one of the few breeds that has remained in the service of what it was originally intended to be - a companion. And, while no one knows for sure, it is believed that Shih Tzus were created by crossing a Lhaso Apso, a Tibetan Mountain dog and a Pekignese.

Discovered during World War II by British Soldiers the dogs were brought to the United Kingdom and the United States. Shih Tzus were not registered with the American Kennel Club until 1969, however, they have since soared in popularity, and are now in the AKC’s Top 10 Most Popular dogs, according to the Club’s registrations.

Shih Tzus are among the heartiest of the Toy Breeds, and are very playful, outgoing, and affectionate with sweet dispositions. The breed is intelligent and responsive making them relatively easy to train if you are patient, consistent and use praise and reward-based training. Shih Tzus are more likely to respond to a kind voice, vs. a stern one, so be mindful of that when training, or trying to get your dog’s attention.

The Shih Tzus petite, compact bodies should not fool you. As they are not as delicate as they look, and they can be quite strong for their size and weight. In fact the name Shih Tzu, quite literally means Lion Dog, and it is appropriate as these little dogs are courageous, and unafraid to stand up for themselves. While the breed is usually not dog aggressive, it is a good idea that you pay special attention in situations where other larger dogs are present as Shih Tzus are not likely to run and hide if they are attacked, or aggressed upon even if the other dog is 10x their size.

Stay Well With Your Animals

Most pet owners don’t need reminding. Animals make people feel good. But we’re talking about more than feeling glad they’re around. Your favorite animal can make you healthy and help you stay that way. You may be surprised at just how many ways a pet can improve your health.

<!--

–>

Pets Are Natural Mood Enhancers

It only takes 15 to 30 minutes with a dog or cat or watching fish swim to feel less anxious and less stressed. Your body actually goes through physical changes in that length of time that make a difference in your mood. The level of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, is lowered. And the production of serotonin, an important chemical associated with well-being, is increased. Reducing stress saves your body a lot of wear and tear.

Keep Blood Pressure in Check

You still have to watch your weight and exercise. But having a pet can help you manage your blood pressure. In one study of 240 married couples, pet owners had lower blood pressure and lower heart rates during rest than people who did not own a pet. That held true whether they were at rest or undergoing stress tests. And another study showed that children with hypertension actually lowered their blood pressure while petting their dog.

Help for Lowering Cholesterol

To manage cholesterol, doctors still recommend that you follow guidelines regarding diet, exercise, and medication. But owning a pet has the potential of making it easier to avoid the dangers of cholesterol. Researchers have noted lower levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in people who own pets compared to people who don’t. However, this could be attributed to lifestyle factors of pet owners.

Cats and Dogs Good for the Heart

Research has shown the long-term benefits of owning a cat include protection for your heart. Over the 20 years of one study, people who never owned a cat were 40% more likely to die of a heart attack than those who had. Another study showed that dog owners had a significantly better survival rate one year after a heart attack. Overall, pet owners have a lower risk of dying from any cardiac disease, including heart failure.

Pet an Animal and Fight Depression

Therapists have been known to prescribe a pet as a way of dealing with and recovering from depression. No one loves you more unconditionally than your pet. And a pet will listen to you talk for as long as you want to talk. Petting a cat or dog has a calming effect. And taking care of a pet — walking with it, grooming it, playing with it — takes you out of yourself and helps you feel better about the way you spend your time.

Better Physical Fitness

People who own dogs tend to be more physically active and less obese than people who don’t. Taking your dog for a daily 30-minute walk will keep you moving and ensure that you meet the minimum recommendations for healthy physical activity. Two 15-minute walks, one in the morning and one in the evening, will do the same thing. And after that, just playing fetch in the back yard with your dog will earn you healthful dividends.

Make Your Pet an Exercise Buddy

If you exercise with your pet, you’ll both benefit. Shine a flashlight on the wall or wave a string while you do a step aerobics routine. You’re cat will get a healthy workout chasing the light, and you’ll be thoroughly entertained. Some people like to use their cat rather than dumbbells when doing weight training. And nationwide, there are yoga classes for people and their dogs, called doga. Call your local gym or ask your vet if there are similar programs in your area.

Fewer Strokes Among Cat Owners

Researchers aren’t sure why. But cat owners have fewer strokes than people who don’t own cats. It’s partly due to the effects owning a pet can have on a person’s circulation. But researchers speculate that cats may have a more calming effect on their owners than other animals do. It may also have something to do with the personality of a cat owner. Cats often become the focus of their owner’s interest, which diverts them from other stressful worries.

More Interaction, Less Isolation

One key to a healthy mind is staying engaged with others. And pet owners have a tendency to want to talk with other pet owners. A dog is a conversation waiting to happen. People, especially other people with dogs, will stop and talk with you when they see you walking your pet. Visiting a dog park lets you socialize with other owners while your dog socializes with their dogs.

Fewer Allergies, Stronger Immunity

Researchers have noted that when children grow up in a home with a dog or cat they are less likely to develop allergies. The same is true for kids who live on a farm with large animals. In addition, higher levels of certain immune system chemicals indicate a stronger immune system activation, which will help keep them healthy as they get older.

Cats and Asthma Prevention

It sounds counterintuitive. Pet allergies are one of the most common triggers of asthma. But researchers have studied the effects of having cats in the homes of infants at risk for asthma. What they found was that those children were significantly less likely to develop asthma as they got older. There is one exception. Children whose mothers have a cat allergy are three times more likely to develop asthma after early exposure to cats.

Snack Alarm

For people with diabetes, a sudden drop in the level of blood glucose can be very serious. Some dogs can alert their owner to a dangerous drop before it actually happens. They may be responding to chemical changes in the body that give off a scent. The alarm gives the owner time to eat a snack to avoid the emergency. About one in three dogs living with people with diabetes have this ability. Dogs for Diabetics is training more dogs to help more people.

Working With a Counselor

Some mental health therapists use a dog in therapy. A dog in the office may help someone be more at ease. But that’s not all. A remark to or about a dog may reveal what’s really on a patient’s mind. One therapist tells about a couple in his office who started bickering. The dog, which usually just slept during the session, got up and wanted out. He used that to help the couple see how their fighting affected others, especially their children.

Partners in Better Cancer Care

Cats and dogs both get cancer, and both benefit from research on human cancer. But more and more the opposite is also true. Humans are benefiting from research on their cancers. Dogs and cats can get the same kinds of cancers humans do. For example, studies of prostate cancer in dogs have led to a better understanding of how it develops in older men. And preventing cancer in pets can lead to new prevention strategies for their human owners.

Overcoming the Limitations of ADHD

Kids with ADHD can benefit from working with and keeping a pet. Taking charge of the tasks on a pet care schedule helps a child learn to plan and be responsible. Pets need to play, and playing with a pet is an excellent way to release excess energy. That means an easier time falling asleep at bed time. And because the bond between a pet and a child is unconditional love, pets help children with ADHD learn about self-esteem.

Autism: Addressing the Senses

Sensory issues are common among children with autism. Sensory integration activities are designed to help them adjust, for instance, to the way something feels against their skin. Or it may be how they react to certain smells or sounds. Dogs and horses have both sometimes been incorporated into these activities. The children typically find it calming to work with animals. And animals easily hold the attention of children with autism.

Want Stronger Bones? Walk the Dog

Strong bones are your best defense against osteoporosis and painful fractures. Walking your dog helps. It’s a weight-bearing exercise that strengthens your bones and the muscles around them. It also lets you spend time in the sun, which provides vitamin D. If you have osteoporosis, be sure you guard against falls. Use a short leash that won’t get tangled. And don’t walk a dog that is liable to jump on you and make you lose your balance.

Stretching With the Cat

If you have arthritis, you know its important to stretch. You also know it can be hard to know when you’re stretching enough. An article in Arthritis Today advises cat owners to take a cue from their cat. Watch how many times she stretches every day, and when she does, you do it too. If you can, get down on the floor and go through the same motions. If you can’t get on the floor, sit on a chair and follow along by stretching your upper body.

Managing Arthritis Together

If your dog has arthritis, you can use the effort to manage his to help manage yours. When you make an appointment at the vet, also call and make your own doctor’s appointment. Regular exercise is important for both of you, so walk with your dog. Keep your medicine in the same place you keep the dog’s. That way you’ll see it when you get his. And if you can, coordinate taking your medicines at the same time you give him his medicine.

Getting Back in the Saddle

Some rehab programs for stroke patients use horses to help facilitate recovery. At places like Xenophon Therapeutic Riding Center in California, clients who have had strokes start riding with side walkers and someone leading the horse. Horseback riding provides stretching exercise, which is especially good if one side has been made weaker. It also helps the person regain balance and build core strength.

Relief From RA

People with rheumatoid arthritis derive benefit from movements like walking and throwing a Frisbee with their pet. And pets provide a distraction that can help take your thoughts off of your own condition. But perhaps the best help comes from those dogs or cats that seem to be super sensitive to people who aren’t feeling well. Sometimes just their presence can provide a relieving comfort.

Soothing Heat

A Mexican hairless dog called a Xolo is known for generating intense body heat. An organization called Paws for Comfort trains Xolos to be service dogs for people with fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain that respond to heat. People get relief just by placing their hurting limbs against the dog’s body or lying up next to it. Some dogs have even been trained to ride around wrapped around the neck of a person with chronic neck pain.

A “seizure dog” is one that has been specially trained to live and work with people who have epilepsy. Some are trained to bark and alert the parents when a child is having a seizure outside or in another room. Some lie next to a person having a seizure to prevent injury (as seen in this demonstration). And some work has been done training dogs to warn before a seizure occurs. This gives the person time to lie down or move away from a dangerous place such as a hot stove.

Staying Independent

Specially trained dogs can perform tasks that let people with Parkinson’s disease maintain their independence. They can pick up dropped items or fetch requested ones. They can provide balance support, open and close doors, turn lights on with their paws. They can also sense when someone with Parkinson’s is “freezing” and touch the foot to let the person keep walking. Groups like the Delta Society can help you find a good service dog.

A Better Quality of Life

Visits from therapy dogs help patients recovering from devastating illness or an event such as a stroke. Some dogs are trained to understand a range of commands which lets them help people with aphasia (a language disorder common in older adults, particularly those who’ve had a stroke) feel good when they see the dog understands them. And, petting or scratching a dog can help a patient rebuild strength while recovering from a stroke or other illness. It also creates a feeling of calm.

A Calming Presence

People with AIDS are less likely to be depressed if they own a pet, especially if they’re strongly attached. And with an animal in the home, people with Alzheimer’s have fewer anxious outbursts. The animal also helps the caregivers feel less burdened. Cats seem to be particularly helpful since they require less care than dogs.

Animal Assisted Therapies

Some studies are being done on bringing specially trained animals into clinical settings, which is happening in more and more hospitals and nursing homes. One of the biggest advantages of letting patients interact with animals in such places appears to be improved mood and reduced anxiety.

Description:
The name “Shih Tzu” means lion dog in Chinese, it received the name because of its long, flowing mane-like coat. It is a sturdy, lively, toy dog with long flowing double coat. This dog has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. It may display an arrogant personality, but is actually playful and gentle. This dog adapts well to any family situation and will enjoy a cuddle in your lap, doing tricks, or fetching a tennis ball.

Temperament:
The Shih-Tzu is a happy, hardy, alert, and spunky little dog. It is dignified, courageous and sometimes arrogant. This dog does well with polite, careful children. It is gentle and affectionate. It can get snappish if it is surprised or peeved. It makes friends easily and although obstinate can respond well to consistent patient training. This dog makes a very alert watchdog. It likes to bark, but is usually quiet inside the house. Socialization at an early age is a must. It is generally good with other pets. Some can be difficult to housebreak. It is a naturally active dog but if it is allowed it will lie around in its favorite spots. Daily walks are a good idea. Do not over feed this dog or it will quickly become fat.

Grooming:
Long, dense, not curly with a good undercoat. This dog requires a good daily grooming using a bristle brush. A topknot is usually tied with a bow so that the dog can see properly. Some owners prefer to have them trimmed to make the coat easier and less time consuming to care for. This breed sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy suffers if the coat is kept very well groomed.

Origin:
Documents and paintings dating from the sixteenth century show dogs resembling a small lion (which the Shih-Tzu is sometimes called). In the seventeenth century, dogs were brought from Tibet and bred in the forbidden City of Peking, probably by crossing the Tibetan Lhasa Apso and the native Pekingese. The Shih-Tzu became a favorite of the Imperial Chinese court. The breed was so revered that for many years after the Chinese began trading with the West, they refused to sell, or even give away, any of the little dogs. It was not until 1930 that the first pair was imported to England. The Shih-Tzu was recognized in Britain in 1946 and by the AKC in the United States in 1969. Today the breed is very popular, both as a companion and as a glamorous show dog.

The Shih Tzu puppy is a handful but a lovable handful at that. If you chose your puppy correctly, this dog will delight you and your family for a long time. The life span of a Shih Tzu dog is usually about 15 years – time in which they will create an exceptional bond with you and with all the members of your family – including your other pets. The Shih Tzu puppy cares to socialize and play and will always aim to be the center of attraction.

When caring for a Shih Tzu puppy, you will realize that it will need a lot of rest and hence, when it naps you should respect its time off if you do not want to have a cranky puppy. This puppy is exceptionally intelligent and agile – however, you will find that he has a mind of its own and it will be extremely hard to housetrain it. The puppy will listen only if it is profusely praised and repeatedly taught with positive reinforcement that it is best to relieve itself outside. The crate training will be an excellent aid for this.

Focus on the Basics

One of the most important aspects of the Shih Tzu puppy care would be the vaccination schedule. You will need to make your appointments accordingly and ensure that your Shih Tzu puppy gets all the vaccines that are recommended by the vet. As a precautionary method, you should buy the puppy with an understanding that if you find a serious defect in the puppy within 48 hours, you will have it returned. Hence, a visit to the vet is must as soon as you bring the little powder puff home.

Until your puppy is properly vaccinated and you vet okays it, do not let your puppy mix with another dogs, sniff outdoors where other dogs may wander or mix with other animals in the home. This will ensure that it will not catch any stray virus from anywhere before the vaccination is through. The vet will also tell you how to ensure that your Shih Tzu puppy has adequate protection against fleas, ticks and lice, as well as intestinal worms.

You should arrange to have a trainer come to your home as soon as the Shih Tzu puppy gets comfortable in the house – a good time would be in about every three days. An alternative Shih Tzu puppy care method would be to take it to obedience school. Remember, it is very difficult to house train this dog, and the sooner you start the faster it will learn.

Unless you are very serious (and you know what you are doing) about breeding the Shih Tzu puppy, you should have it neutered or spayed as early as possible. This will eliminate the troubles that come with territory marking and coming into heat.

It is not really very challenging to care for a Shih Tzu puppy at home. It is great to start preparing for your Shih Tzu puppy well in advance, so the problems would be minimized, if any.

There are a number of reasons dogs bark. The most common include:

Alerting behavior, such as when a stranger is at the front door.

To show excitement, like you would see during an active play session.

To communicate with you when he wants something, as in, “Let’s go outside!”

To communicate with other dogs when he wants to say hello or something else.

Separation behavior, such as when dogs bark, bark, bark when their owners are gone.

Some herding breeds, like the Shetland sheepdog, will also bark when something is moving. This can be caused by excitement or a desire to herd the object. You’ve mentioned several situations that sound like moving objects are an issue, including cars, falling leaves, vacuum cleaners, brooms, snow, and other dogs.

Here are two tricks to try to handle movement driven barking:

1. Teach your dog to bark on cue. When the dog is barking, be ready with some treats. When the dog is quiet, say, “quiet,” and give the dog a treat. Whatever you do, don’t give the dog the food reward when it is barking.

2. Teach your dog how to do a reliable sit-and-stay. You can put the dog on the other side of the room when you start to sweep. If the dog is quiet, go to the dog, say, “Good boy, quiet,” and give him a treat. In the beginning of training, there should be some distance between him and the broom, but eventually, he will be able to be closer. We call this a “sit and watch” procedure.

These tips and others are described in more detail in our book “Citizen Canine: Ten Essential Skills Every Well-Mannered Dog Should Know.”
